How a credit card balance transfer can start your 2019 off on the right foot

Now that the holidays are over, in addition to fond memories of friends and family, there may be something else also being carried over from last year: credit card bills. Although HawaiiUSA recommends paying off your credit card bills on-time and in full, sometimes with everything else going on in life that just isn’t possible.

If you find yourself in such a situation, especially if your credit card balances have high interest rates associated with the respective cards, a great way to save money and take off some of that financial stress is by transferring your balances to a lower interest credit card. Finding the right offer can not only save you money, it can also help keep your new year happy.

Here are a few things to keep in mind when transferring your credit card balances:

  • What kind of fees are there?
It’s easy to get excited about a balance transfer, especially when you’re looking at what you might be able to save on interest. But what can easily eat away at your savings are fees. The fee you’ll want to be extremely conscious about is a balance transfer fee, which is typically a percentage of the amount being transferred over to the new card; common balance transfer fees can range anywhere from 3% to 5%.
  • Is the lower credit card rate a promotional rate? If so, when will it change?
Credit card companies will often offer a low rate to entice borrowers to transfer balances to their cards. Once the promotional period ends, however, the rate could dramatically increase. It’s a good idea to find out what the rate will be once the promotion is over; it could be higher than your current card’s rate. Always be sure you understand the exact terms of a promotional period before taking any action.
  • The HawaiiUSA difference: the commitment to our members’ financial wellness
Unlike many other balance transfer programs available on the market, a balance transfer to a HawaiiUSA VISA® Credit Card has NO balance transfer fee, NO minimum transfer amount, and NO annual fee.

HawaiiUSA VISA® cardholders can apply for a balance transfer through HawaiiUSA Online Banking
